On February 9th, the Washington College Career Center welcomed Katie Brockman, CEO of Katie Brockman & CO., to campus via Zoom to discuss the future of publishing and current opportunities in the field. This was one of many writing and publishing-related events for students as part of Sophie Kerr week; a celebration of the life and career of writer and editor Sophie Kerr, preceded by an alumni panel of working journalists. Brockman is a publishing professional, having worked for companies such as Veranda Magazine, and managed brands such as Hearst Publishing and Sandow. Now, she assists companies with their branding and publishing needs. During the talk, she reflected back on her career in publishing, and the choices she made to reach her current career path. She answered questions, both prompted by Career Coach Georgina Bliss and from attendees, about those steps she took, and her perspective as a publishing higher-up. She was asked what an entry-level position in publishing looks like today, and the most valuable skills she has gained and used. Brockman emphasized the importance of networking at a job and collaboration with co-workers. She advised students to “act like you belong” in whichever position they undertake. People, especially superiors, will take notice.
